The Best of the Best
Dream Team: Household pros even Angelina Jolie would hire
Joy Cayton has been working as a baby nurse for the last 20 years and has worked for many different families including Steven Spielberg’s and Don Bellisario’s. She has always loved caring for babies and has a special gift for soothing an infant when everyone else has given up. One of the reasons she loves her job is the gratification she gets from relieving sleep-deprived parents and sending them to catch up on much deserved rest. Cayton is at the top of her career and is now making over $100K. Her current assignment is in Dallas, Texas, but this busy lady is booked until October 2008. The tool that she uses most on the job is love, which keeps her babies happy!

Baby Nurses to the Stars

A recent job for Joy Cayton was coddling the infant daughter of MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe in Malibu. But there was a time when she worked as a nanny caring for older children until she decided to devote herself exclusively to newborns.
Her journey as a baby nurse started with Gordon and Belita Auchincloss, who hired her to take care of their infant Nick—who would eventually become her godson and the love of her life.
“I like to start off with brand-new infants, because then you bond. You’re in love, they’re in love. My specialty is getting babies to sleep through the night. I have my own technique. When parents are at their wits’ ends, I have no problem at all.”
Joy’s love of newborns is so great that it led her to leave (temporarily) a situation she loved. After four happy years as the nanny for Universal Studios executive producer Don Bellisario, her agent called to tell her that Steven Spielberg and his wife were expecting. She moved in four months before his child with Kate Capshaw was born. In the meantime, Max, his four-year-old son by Amy Irving, would visit.
“Steven is such a great dad. When Max was there, Steven made him breakfast, took him to school and picked him up, bathed him, and told him long stories at bedtime. His wife is a really good mom, too.”
Joy stayed six months, but her former family, the Bellisarios, never forgot her.
“Steven came home one day from Universal and complained, ‘Don Bellisario’s telling everyone I stole his nanny!’” When Sasha Spielberg turned two months old, Joy returned to the Bellisario household for another four years.
“I always have a baby in hand, and I love twins and multiples. The more babies the better!” She says with a laugh, “After babies grow up, I start pestering the mom to have another one.”
Joy’s days spill over with love from all the children in her care, past and present. “It’s changed my life,” she marvels. “It’s softened me.”
